Abstract
Background : We conducted to investigate the difference in vitamins & minerals intakes between normotensive workers and hypertensive workers.

Methods : There were 338 subjects from two plants. We measured height, weight and blood pressure, and investigated the frequencies of food intake. We classified the subjects into normal, prehypertension and hypertension group by the criteria of the 7th report of joint national committee detection(JNC), and investigated the differences in vitamins and minerals intake.

Results : The group with the highest intake of vitamin B1 and B12, niacin, sodium and iron was prehypertension group, followed by normal group and hypertension group in order(p<0.05). For the ratios(%) of intake to Dietary Reference Intakes for Koreans(KDRIs), there were significant differences in vitamins A, K and B12, sodium and iron among three groups(p<0.05). The proportions of workers, whose intake of vitamins B2 and B12 were unbalanced, in prehypertension group were significantly higher than those in the other groups(p<0.05). The index of nutritional quality(INQs) of vitamins E and B2 were less than 1. The group with the highest INQ of sodium was prehypertension group, followed by normal group and hypertension group in order(p<0.05).

Conclusions : There were significant differences in intake of vitamins A, B1, B2, B12 and E, niacin, sodium and iron among three groups. The intake of sodium and the proportions of workers whose nutrients intakes was unbalance in prehypertension group were higher than those in the other groups. Therefore, it is necessary to improve food habit in prehypertensive workers as well as hypertensive workers. (Korean J Health Promot Dis Prev 2007 ; 7(2):113~122)
